The New York Mari-Amman Koil was founded and registered as 501(c)3 non-profit Temple (Koil) in the County of Queens, New York on January 27, 2002 by the late Veeramootoo Madray (Mootooboy), Mr, Chandralal (Haresh) Apanna and Dr. Errol G Virasawmi

Dr. Errol G. Virasawmi

Dr. Errol G. Virasawmi, has been in the field of higher education for over 30 years. He was born on the coast of Corentyne in British Guyana. He now resides in Long Island, NY with his wife, Savitree and 4 children; Ms. Amanda Virasawmi, M.S., CPA, Ms. Stephanie Virasawmi, M.A, ATR-BC, LCAT, Mr. Jonathan Virasawmi, C.A.Tech., and Ms. Elissa Virasawmi, B.S., P.H.R.

Passed down through family lineage, he is the third generation of Mariamman priests. His family included the Naidu’s from Albion and the Madraymootoo’s from Williamsburg/Rose Hall. In addition, he received his guidance and blessings (warum) to be a priest from Gurus. His gurus were Gope Matadin, Mariamman Pusari; Lil Mouth Raj Ranganaiden, Mariamman Pusari; and his elder brother, Chinappa Virasawmi, Kargum Marlo Adi, Music Composer, and Tamil Historian.

At the age of 7, he began participation in the Mariamman Pusai at the Rose Hall Town Kali Temple in Guyana. In 2002, became Co-founder and Chairman of New York Mariamman Koil in Rosedale, NY. He began head priesthood at Rose Hall Town Kali Temple in Guyana in 2007. He has been serving as the head priest of NY Mariamman Koil in Rosedale, NY since 2008.

In addition to being a priest, Dr. Virasawmi is an ordained minister in the U.S. and marriage officiant in the state of NY. He enjoys traveling, conducting research on religion, spirituality, human genetics, and spending time with his grandson, Jayden.
